Born from a Happy Accident (and a Catchy Song)
Richard was working on a commissioned reproduction, birdseye maple mantel for a beautiful 100+ year-old fireplace surround missing its mantel, in San Francisco, cutting the custom corbels by hand. Somewhere between the sketch and the sawdust, he misread a measurement and cut one to the wrong size. He tossed it onto the bench, set aside for scrap.
Asha walked by, paused, and said,
“That’s beautiful! You’re not throwing that away… I know just what to do with it.”
And just like that, Hang On Sloopy was born. The name? A nod to the song stuck in Richard’s head that whole afternoon.
